Today, before he attended the dignified transfer of the bodies of some of our fallen service members at Dover Air Force Base, Dear Leader Trump told reporters, “All of them said very strongly, ‘We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.’” So we’re fighting to honor them, I guess.
Slightly off topic interruption: Apparently, we are now back to the nuclear weapons rationale for the war. And you thought we had moved on!
Anyway, as the New York Times noted, Trump did not say how he knows the views of the now-dead service members. It’s pretty clear that he didn’t hear this from their parents or next-of-kin; he would have said so if he had. And I think we can rule out his having spoken to the service members before or after they died.
So did Trump hallucinate their views? (That’s 25th Amendment territory.) Has he forgotten that he never actually talked with them? (Also 25th Amendment territory.)
Is his megalomania so bad that he just assumes that they must have shared his views about Iran getting a nuclear weapon, just as he apparently believes that he simply cannot have lost a fair election and he believes that polling shows “loud and clear” that Americans aren’t against the war? Maybe he meant only his kind of Americans–you know, MAGA Americans. (That’s not 25th Amendment territory, just we’re-in-deep-shit territory.)
I guess there’s always the possibility that he’s just lying. But c’mon, Donald Trump lying about dead service members? That would be too low even for him, right?
